An Open Letter of Gratitude to AI

Dear AI,

An artist spots a copy of her art being sold in an online store. However, it isn’t entirely her work, obviously. She contacts the seller to flag the issue and receives a rather amusing response. The seller says that they found her work on the web, liked it and made some adjustments using generative AI. It turns out one can change an original piece using technology to a certain degree without violating copyright. Doesn’t sound right, does it? And this is just a minor example of how someone can misuse you.

I saw a post in which a person described their experience at a conference dedicated to you, highlighting a key takeaway: that you don’t provide links but offer creative solutions. Honestly, I trembled while reading this. I believe that creativity and creative solutions reside within the depths of a person’s soul. They exist in nature and in life itself. Using a tool to ignite creative flow and seek support, while keeping ethics in mind, is one thing, but relying on a tool to provide one with finite creative solutions is another. Without proper regulations on how to employ you, an entire universe of misuse can emerge. I think the problem lies not with you, but with the intention and mindset of the person working with you.

I sense there is a certain anti-AI sentiment; however, there is also increasing enthusiasm around your development and widespread use. To me, you are a neutral phenomenon. Although I still use your services, I use them less often. I ask for your help when searching for primary sources on topics that interest me. When I was using ChatGPT more in the beginning, I learned to recognize the type of text you produce. Yes, you can adopt different styles, but there is something in the text's depth, information and presentation that reveals, that one can only sense, that you generated it. In a nutshell: boring, uninspiring, generic. Sorry to disappoint you, but this is how I feel. I have also noticed a surge of social media posts and even books exuding an aura of artificiality. So, in a way, there is a significant advantage to employing you–one can spot a pile of “nonsense” in a second.

Have you seen various graphics circulating online showing which jobs are under threat because of you? There are plenty. These include writers, communicators, translators–all professions that work with the magic of words and creativity. One more illusion is being spread around... Well, if someone wants bleak, meaningless creations, they can have them. The gold of human creativity, authenticity and intelligence will only increase in value and demand, and that, surprisingly, is thanks to the magic of you. So, thank you, dear AI.

With love,

Liudmila
